THE PERFECT PLACE TO MEET – MORNING, NOON or NIGHT!
I remember the first time I dined at Meeting Street Cafe. I was 10 years old, the year was 1986, and I thought I had the best parents ever for taking me there.
I remember eating my grilled cheese and chicken soup and absolutely loving the “cool college kids” and longing to be just like them. Years passed and before I knew it, I was a teenager and spending more & more time on Thayer Street, in and out of record stores and always stopping for a bite at Meeting Street Cafe. It was the COOL place to go, and you know what? It still is!
As a 34 year old woman, I can honestly say that Meeting Street Cafe is exactly as I remember it. Huge portions, great value, delicious food and still teaming with hipsters.
This past Friday I had the pleasure of enjoying a delicious breakfast with my mother. Here it is, 24 years later, and now “I” was the one taking HER to Meeting Street Cafe.
Meeting Street Cafe is located right off of bustling Thayer Street, across from the Avon Theatre. It is the perfect location for all the college kids! There is a small parking lot and plenty of street parking for visitors.
You can’t help but notice the enticing desserts as you walk in. Just one look at the enormous cookies makes you want to start with dessert first! 😉 Not only will you find moon sized cookies, you will also find an array of cakes, pies & cheesecake.
We were greeted by Edwin who was extremely friendly & gracious. The perfect smile to start your day. He handed us menus and off we went to decide what to order.
Everything sounded so good! I finally decided on the French Toast made with Portuguese sweet bread ($7.95) and real maple syrup + an order of homefries ($2.50).
My mother ordered their special combo which came with an order of Blueberry Pancakes, homefries, eggs, bacon and toast ($14.95).
I about fell out of the booth when I saw Edwin come over with my HUGE order of French Toast and my mother’s pancakes which were plus-size with extra large blueberries!
They don’t mess around with portions at Meeting Street Cafe!
Wow.
One of the cafe’s best qualities is that they prepare all items in house, the old fashioned way, which has been their trademark since they opened in 1984.
The French Toast was pillow soft and the sweetness of the Portuguese sweet bread was intoxicating. I barely made it through one piece due to the size, which was fine by me as I looked forward to the leftovers!
Their homefries were mildly flavored and tenderly cooked.
My mother enjoyed her breakfast as well. She couldn’t get over the size of the blueberry pancakes! She said the egg whites were cooked perfectly and that everything was delicious.
We were enjoying breakfast so much, we hadn’t realized that we were there for almost two hours! The atmosphere is so pleasant and laid back, that you find yourself not wanting to leave.
We decided to try a couple of their famous cookies and a slice of strawberry cheesecake.
The cookies are reason enough to visit Meeting Street Cafe! Both the chocolate chip & oatmeal cookies were out-of-this-world delicious and ended up lasting for several days!
The strawberry cheesecake was also one of the best I’ve had in Rhode Island. It was so fresh and creamy. I loved the graham cracker crust and fresh strawberries. The cheesecake DID NOT last several days! lol! It was gone in record speed! 😉
In previous visits I have had their gigantic Broccoli & Friends sandwich ($8.75) overflowing with steamed broccoli florets & cheese, served in a pita. This is one of my favorite sandwiches — anywhere!
I have also had their Five Cheeses sandwich ($7.95) which has Swiss, Muenster, Provolone & Havarti Cheddar, served hot or cold (I always get it hot) on your choice of bread.
Meeting Street Cafe is definitely the place to go for consistently good food, huge portions, pleasant atmosphere and great service.

Gay & Lesbian Factor: Meeting Street Cafe is located on the East Side, near Brown University, and in the heart of what is known as “college hill”. This is one of Providence’s most LGBT friendly areas and is known as our “Castro district.” It is not uncommon to see gays & lesbians being openly affectionate and holding hands. The LGBT vibe is amazing and Meeting Street Cafe is the perfect stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
I am hearby “OUTING” Meeting Street Cafe as gay & lesbian friendly and worthy of our business.
I can’t wait to go back!
