Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the country, but don’t let its size fool you! What we lack in square miles, we more than make up for in charm, character, incredible food, and unforgettable experiences. For LGBTQ+ travelers, Rhode Island offers something especially wonderful: a welcoming, inclusive destination where you can enjoy a romantic getaway, explore vibrant communities, and feel comfortable being exactly who you are.

From the fantastic restaurants, LGBTQ+ nightlife, and thriving arts scene of Providence to the breathtaking coastal scenery and romantic seaside atmosphere of Newport, there’s so much to discover. Add in the picturesque waterfront towns scattered along Narragansett Bay, independently owned businesses, and a growing number of LGBTQ+-welcoming places to stay, dine, and explore, and you’ve got all the ingredients for an unforgettable New England getaway. And one piece of advice? Come hungry! Trust me, you’re going to want to eat your way through the Ocean State.

As someone who calls Rhode Island home and has spent more than 25 years promoting LGBTQ+ travel, I genuinely love introducing visitors to the places that make our little state so special. Of course, we’re known for our beautiful beaches, historic neighborhoods, and classic New England coastal charm. But what I especially appreciate about Rhode Island is the sense of community and the opportunity to discover places where LGBTQ+ travelers can feel welcomed, respected, and included.

Because to me, a truly memorable vacation is about so much more than sightseeing. It’s checking into a hotel where you and your partner feel completely comfortable being yourselves. It’s holding hands while strolling along the waterfront, enjoying a romantic dinner without a second thought, or discovering an LGBTQ+-owned business where you’re greeted like an old friend. It’s finding that cozy little coffee shop you wish you had back home, or striking up a conversation with a local who shares a few hidden gems you won’t find in every travel guide.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend with your partner, a fun-filled getaway with friends, or a solo adventure, Rhode Island has a little something for everyone. And while Providence may be the heart of our state’s LGBTQ+ community, I encourage you to venture beyond the capital and discover the smaller coastal towns, local businesses, and beautiful neighborhoods that give Rhode Island its unique personality.

That’s the Rhode Island I love sharing with LGBTQ+ travelers. A destination where you can celebrate who you are, discover wonderful places, support welcoming local businesses, and create memories that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.

After all, a great vacation isn’t just about where you go. It’s about how a place makes you feel. And everyone deserves to feel welcome. 🌈

That’s exactly where Gay Travel Information and We Are Gay Friendly come in!

My journey in LGBTQ+ travel and marketing began back in 1999 with Out & About Travel, eventually leading to the launch of Gay Travel Information in 2010 and the creation of We Are Gay Friendly in 2013. With more than 25 years of experience advocating for inclusive travel and connecting LGBTQ+ travelers with welcoming businesses.

We look beyond the rainbow flag or sticker in the window and focus on what really matters: genuine hospitality, exceptional service, welcoming atmospheres, and memorable experiences. We believe LGBTQ+ travelers deserve the same wonderful experiences as everyone else, without having to wonder whether they’ll be accepted.

Over the years, we’ve also had the pleasure of helping businesses better understand and connect with the LGBTQ+ community, encouraging meaningful inclusivity that goes beyond marketing.

And because Rhode Island is my home, sharing its hidden gems, wonderful restaurants, charming accommodations, and welcoming communities is especially close to my heart.

With that in mind, I’ve put together some of my favorite ways to experience the Ocean State, including businesses featured in our Rhode Island Gay-Friendly Directory.

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or rediscovering Rhode Island, I hope this guide inspires you to explore, support welcoming local businesses, and experience the very best our little state has to offer. 🌈

Start in Providence

A scenic view of a river with modern and historic buildings lining the banks under a clear blue sky, featuring colorful fall foliage and a bridge crossing the water.

Providence: Rhode Island’s Vibrant, LGBTQ+-Welcoming Capital

Rhode Island’s capital city, Providence, is one of New England’s most exciting and welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. With its thriving queer community, diverse dining scene, vibrant nightlife, beautiful historic neighborhoods, and creative spirit, Providence offers the perfect combination of culture, romance, entertainment, and authentic New England charm.

Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend with your partner, a getaway with friends, or a solo adventure, Providence is a city where individuality is celebrated and there’s always something interesting to discover.

While downtown offers plenty of attractions, restaurants, theaters, and LGBTQ+ nightlife, two neighborhoods I especially encourage visitors to explore are the East Side and Federal Hill.

Explore Providence’s East Side: Historic Charm Meets Creative Energy

The East Side is one of my absolute favorite parts of Providence, and it’s an area I recommend to just about everyone visiting Rhode Island.

Home to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), incuding the RISD MUSEUM, this beautiful neighborhood combines historic New England architecture with a youthful, progressive, and wonderfully creative atmosphere. Its university communities, independent businesses, and artistic culture make it especially appealing to LGBTQ+ visitors who appreciate diverse, inclusive environments.

A busy street scene featuring various shops and restaurants along a downtown area, with parked cars and pedestrians enjoying the day under a blue sky.

Start your adventure along Thayer Street, a lively destination filled with eclectic restaurants, cafes, bookstores, and shops. It’s a great place to grab a coffee, enjoy lunch, people-watch, or simply soak up the neighborhood’s energy.

A short distance away, Wickenden Street offers an entirely different but equally charming experience. Known for its independent boutiques, art galleries, vintage finds, coffee shops, and locally owned businesses, Wickenden has a laid-back, artsy personality that I think many LGBTQ+ travelers will especially appreciate.

History and architecture lovers should also make time for Benefit Street, affectionately known as the Mile of History. Lined with beautifully preserved colonial-era homes, historic landmarks, and picturesque streets, it’s one of the most enjoyable areas in Providence for a leisurely walk.

And for a romantic moment with your partner, don’t miss Prospect Terrace Park, where you’ll find sweeping views of the Providence skyline and the Rhode Island State House. It’s an especially lovely place to visit around sunset.

What makes the East Side so appealing is its personality. It’s historic without feeling stuck in the past, artistic without being pretentious, and filled with little places where you can slow down and enjoy the city at your own pace.

Federal Hill: Providence’s Little Italy and a Food Lover’s Paradise

A vibrant outdoor dining area with metal tables and chairs, surrounded by colorful flower planters. A fountain is visible in the background, and restaurants with umbrellas provide shade. Brightly colored buildings line the street under a clear blue sky.

If there’s one neighborhood I insist visitors experience, it’s Federal Hill.

Often referred to as Providence’s Little Italy, Federal Hill is one of the city’s most beloved and culturally rich neighborhoods. Centered around bustling Atwells Avenue, this historic district is famous for its authentic Italian restaurants, traditional bakeries, specialty food markets, charming cafes, and lively atmosphere.

Outdoor dining area of an Italian restaurant called Angelo's, featuring tables with umbrellas and patrons enjoying meals. The colorful facade of the restaurant is visible, along with a mural on the building behind.

And while Federal Hill isn’t specifically an LGBTQ+ neighborhood, it’s a wonderful destination for queer couples, friends, and families looking to experience Providence’s incredible food scene and enjoy a memorable evening out.

There’s something special about strolling along Atwells Avenue on a warm evening, hearing conversations spilling out from sidewalk restaurants, catching the aroma of freshly prepared Italian food, and deciding which inviting little restaurant to try.

Spend the afternoon browsing specialty markets, stop for an espresso or cappuccino, treat yourself to a freshly made cannoli, and then settle in for a romantic Italian dinner.

Three restaurants worth adding to your itinerary are Massimo Ristorante, a stylish Italian restaurant offering a delicious blend of traditional recipes and contemporary Italian cuisine. Andino’s, a longtime neighborhood favorite, is known for its traditional Italian-American cuisine and lively atmosphere, and Camille’s, an iconic Federal Hill establishment offers classic Italian dining in an elegant setting.

Providence’s LGBTQ+ Community and Nightlife

A close-up of two people leaning in for a kiss, showcasing their intertwined hands and visible tattoos. One person has blue hair and wears rings, while the other has curly hair and multiple bracelets.

One of the things I love most about Providence is its longstanding LGBTQ+ community and the important role queer culture plays in the city’s identity.

Providence has a rich history of LGBTQ+ activism, nightlife, arts, and community involvement. The city hosts Rhode Island Pride, including its popular illuminated nighttime Pride parade, which brings thousands of people together to celebrate diversity, equality, and community.

A vibrant LGBTQ+ parade scene at night featuring a float decorated with rainbow flags and colorful lights. Drag performers in glittering outfits wave to the crowd, which includes people holding rainbow flags and cheering.

Throughout the year, visitors can also discover LGBTQ+ bars, entertainment venues, drag performances, community gatherings, and other events, particularly in and around downtown Providence.

And that’s something I always like to emphasize when recommending LGBTQ+ travel destinations: you don’t have to spend your entire vacation in specifically gay establishments to enjoy a wonderful, inclusive getaway.

Part of the fun is discovering the entire city, from its queer nightlife and arts scene to its wonderful restaurants, historic neighborhoods, and independently owned shops.

Providence offers plenty of opportunities to do just that.

LGBTQ+-Friendly Places to Stay in Providence

Finding accommodations where you and your partner feel welcomed and comfortable is an important part of planning any LGBTQ+ getaway.

Front entrance of the Aloft hotel, showcasing modern architecture with floor-to-ceiling windows, purple lighting accents, and planters.

For a stylish, modern stay in the heart of the city, Aloft Providence Downtown is an excellent choice for LGBTQ+ travelers. Located along the Providence River, this trendy, pet-friendly hotel features contemporary accommodations, a lively atmosphere, and the popular Blu Violet Rooftop Bar, offering beautiful city views, all within easy reach of Providence’s restaurants, nightlife, and cultural attractions.

The Providence Marriott Downtown is a convenient choice for travelers who appreciate the amenities and services of a full-service hotel. Its location also provides access to downtown attractions and nearby neighborhoods.

For those who prefer a more intimate, boutique-style experience, Hotel Providence places guests in the heart of the city’s arts and entertainment district, making it an appealing home base for couples planning romantic dinners, theater outings, or evenings exploring downtown.

Whether you’re traveling with your spouse, partner, friends, or on your own, choosing accommodations that value hospitality and inclusivity can make all the difference.

Where to Eat: Providence’s Incredible Dining Scene

If you love food, you’re going to love Providence!

The city has earned a reputation for its diverse culinary offerings, combining fresh New England seafood, traditional Italian cuisine, international flavors, and innovative dining concepts.

For seafood lovers, Hemenway’s Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar is a longtime Providence favorite offering fresh seafood, classic New England dishes, and an inviting dining atmosphere.

If sushi is more your style, Jacky’s Waterplace & Sushi Bar is another option to consider when exploring downtown.

For LGBTQ+ couples celebrating an anniversary, planning a romantic date night, or simply looking to enjoy a special evening together, Mill’s Tavern offers an elegant setting and an elevated dining experience.

Of course, not every meal needs to be a fancy occasion! Providence has plenty of fun, casual restaurants that are perfect for grabbing a bite between sightseeing adventures or enjoying a laid-back evening with friends.

For delicious burgers and a relaxed atmosphere, check out Harry’s Bar & Burger. Another longtime local favorite is Julian’s, a wonderfully eclectic restaurant on Broadway known for its creative comfort food, popular brunch, and quirky personality. It’s exactly the kind of place that makes Providence’s independent dining scene so much fun to explore.

Interior view of a restaurant with wooden tables and chairs, featuring two televisions displaying sports events. A wall mural illustrating brewing equipment and hops is visible, along with condiments on the tables.

If you’re a craft beer enthusiast, Trinity Brewhouse is worth adding to your list for its house-brewed beers and casual pub atmosphere. For Mexican-inspired favorites and a colorful, lively setting, consider Tortilla Flats. And if your idea of a fun night includes shooting pool, watching a game, and enjoying good food and drinks, Snookers Sports, Billiards, Bar and Grill is another option to explore.

One of my favorite pieces of travel advice is to leave a little room in your itinerary for the unexpected. Don’t feel the need to schedule every hour of your visit. Sometimes the best part of a getaway is stumbling upon a wonderful neighborhood restaurant, discovering a cozy cafe, or spending an entire afternoon exploring an area you hadn’t originally planned to visit.

And for LGBTQ+ travelers looking for a welcoming New England getaway filled with personality, wonderful food, romance, and memorable experiences, Providence absolutely deserves a place on your travel list. 🌈

Head to Newport for a Coastal Stay

Aerial view of a coastal estate surrounded by greenery and ocean, featuring a large mansion with intricate architecture.

Newport is an easy place to settle into vacation mode. Spend an afternoon around the harbor, explore the shops, or make time for the city’s historic sights. Comfortable shoes are a good idea; there always seems to be one more street worth exploring.

Our Newport accommodation recommendations include Brenton Hotel, Newport Harbor Island Resort, and The Vanderbilt. Brenton Hotel offers spacious rooms and contemporary coastal style right on the harbor, with shops and restaurants nearby. Newport Harbor Island Resort brings a waterfront escape on Goat Island, complete with dining and spa options. For travelers drawn to Newport’s historic charm, The Vanderbilt pairs a beautifully reimagined downtown mansion with stylish accommodations and plenty of personality. Whether you prefer exploring town or settling in for some relaxation by the water, these properties give you three lovely ways to experience Newport.

For dining, Gas Lamp Grille offers a lively downtown Newport setting for a casual meal and drinks between exploring the shops and waterfront. A few other well-known Newport favorites worth adding to your plans include The Black Pearl on Bannister’s Wharf, especially for its clam chowder; Brick Alley Pub, a longtime Thames Street staple with an extensive menu; and White Horse Tavern, where a historic setting makes dinner feel like part of your Newport sightseeing.

Exterior view of a coffee shop called Nitro Bar, featuring a colorful mural with various food and drink illustrations on the wall.

And coffee lovers, make time for the popular The Nitro Bar! With Newport locations on Thames Street and Pond Avenue, it’s an easy stop for a coffee break before continuing your exploring. Sometimes you just need a little caffeine between the shopping and ocean views. 😉

Nearby in Middletown, Newport Vineyards and its Farm & Barrel Bistro bring together vineyard-grown wines, fresh craft beer, and seasonal dishes celebrating Rhode Island ingredients. Whether you stop for a tasting or settle in for lunch or dinner, it’s a lovely addition to your Newport-area getaway. Check each business’s website for current hours, menus, and reservation options.

If you’re interested in Newport’s connection to the water, add The Sailing Museum & National Sailing Hall of Fame to your plans for exhibits exploring the sport and the people who shaped it. For those beautiful ocean views, make time for the Cliff Walk, where coastal scenery meets Newport’s famous historic mansions. A tour of the Newport Mansions, especially The Breakers or Marble House, offers a closer look at the city’s Gilded Age history. Fort Adams is another worthwhile stop for history lovers, with guided tours of the historic fort. You can also keep things simple with an afternoon browsing Thames Street and exploring Bowen’s and Bannister’s Wharf. Comfortable shoes, a little time by the water, and no overly packed itinerary—that’s a lovely Newport day in my book! Check attraction websites for current hours, tickets, and any Cliff Walk detours before heading out.

Don’t Skip Warren, Bristol & the East Bay

Interior of Galactic Theatre featuring a stage with musical instruments, colorful lighting, and decor including a skeleton and artwork.

One area I would absolutely love to see more visitors discover is Rhode Island’s beautiful East Bay. The charming communities of Warren, Bristol, and Barrington offer a wonderful mix of picturesque waterfront views, historic New England charm, independently owned shops, and fantastic local dining. Each town has its own unique personality, and together they showcase a quieter, more authentic side of Rhode Island that visitors sometimes overlook. This is the kind of place where you’ll want to slow down, wander through a few boutiques, browse a cozy bookstore, grab a coffee, and discover a great little restaurant for dinner. Sometimes the most memorable travel experiences happen when you put away the itinerary and simply enjoy where the day takes you!

Warren: Restaurants, Coffee & Independent Shops, Live Music

Warren may be a small town, but when it comes to great food, charming shops, and local character, it certainly knows how to make a big impression!

One of Warren’s most unique and beloved local treasures is Galactic Theatre, a wonderfully quirky live music venue on Main Street that perfectly captures the town’s creative, eclectic, and delightfully unconventional personality. With its retro atmosphere, vintage films, live performances, comedy, and great cocktails, Galactic is much more than a place to catch a show — it’s a gathering spot that celebrates originality, community, and the independent spirit that makes Warren so special. If you want to experience the true meaning of “Keep Warren Weird,” this is absolutely one of the places to visit! It’s exactly the kind of welcoming, one-of-a-kind establishment that gives our little waterfront town so much character.

For a memorable meal, two of our featured directory favorites, Rhody Roots and Trafford Restaurant, deserve a spot on your dining itinerary. And if you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss Tracy’s Cream + Sugar or The Perfect Sweet Shoppe. After all, stopping for coffee, ice cream, or a delicious treat is practically a sightseeing activity in itself!

Warren’s dining scene offers plenty more to discover. Along picturesque Water Street, Waterdog Kitchen & Bar serves creative comfort food with Portuguese influences, delicious cocktails, and a welcoming indoor-outdoor atmosphere. The Square Peg is another neighborhood favorite, perfect for a casual evening out, while Chomp Kitchen & Drinks is a great choice for mouthwatering burgers, hearty comfort food, and craft beer.

If you’re exploring Warren in the morning, begin your day at Bakeshop by Bywater for freshly baked pastries and coffee, or visit Cafe Water Street for delicious crepes and a relaxing coffee break near the waterfront.

Exterior view of a charming general store with a blue facade, large windows showcasing an inviting interior filled with various goods, and a small bench in front.

Of course, Warren is about much more than its fantastic food scene. The town is filled with independently owned shops and little treasures just waiting to be discovered. Make a stop at Porto General Store on Water Street, a charming shop offering a thoughtfully curated selection of pantry goods, unique gifts, and homewares. Book lovers will also want to spend some time browsing Ink Fish Books, a wonderful independent bookstore featuring books, gifts, and locally made items.

A lifeguard chair with a red umbrella at a beach, overlooking swimmers in the water and sunbathers on the sand under a clear blue sky.

Another great little spot to enjoy Rhode Island’s waterfront is Warren Town Beach, located along the Warren River. It’s a small, laid-back beach that’s perfect for spending a quiet afternoon by the water, enjoying the sunshine, or watching the boats go by. While it doesn’t have the big waves or bustling atmosphere of Rhode Island’s ocean beaches, that’s part of its charm! It’s a nice place to slow down, take in the coastal scenery, and enjoy a little peace and quiet.

My advice? Don’t rush through Warren. Take your time, wander its historic streets, pop into a few shops, enjoy a great meal, and soak up the welcoming, small-town atmosphere. It’s exactly the kind of Rhode Island destination that reminds you some of the best travel experiences are found off the beaten path.

Bristol: Waterfront Dining & a Little Shopping

Busy street scene with people walking along the sidewalk and sitting at outdoor cafe tables. The buildings display festive decorations and green trees line the street on a sunny day.

In Bristol, our spotlights on DeWolf Tavern, and Roberto’s Restaurant & Cafe offer a starting point for choosing where to eat. Pivotal Brewing Company is another stop for craft beer fans, with a distinctive taproom in the restored industrial setting of Unity Park.

For additional dining ideas, consider The Beach House for a meal by the water or Aidan’s Irish Pub for casual pub fare. The Franklin offers French-inspired dining and cocktails, making it a lovely option for an evening out. For breakfast or brunch, add Bristol Sunset Café to your list, while Folklore Provisions brings a European-style café experience with a menu inspired by New England ingredients and Azorean flavors.

An outdoor concert at sunset with a crowd gathered around a gazebo, enjoying live music by a band while boats are anchored in the background.

Coffee lovers can take a break at Empire Tea & Coffee downtown or visit Borealis Coffee Company at Unity Park. While you’re exploring the park’s food and drink offerings, look into Basil & Bunny for plant-based dining and Brick Pizza Co. for pizza. Clearly, you’ll want to arrive in Bristol with an appetite!

Around downtown, browse Grasmere for floral designs, vintage finds, and home accents, or Therapy Boutique for accessories and gifts. Follow your shopping with a walk along the waterfront near Independence Park. You don’t need a complicated itinerary to enjoy Bristol—just give yourself time to stop when something catches your eye.

If you’re visiting Bristol, Colt State Park is an absolute must! It’s easily one of the most beautiful places in Rhode Island and a personal favorite for enjoying everything that makes the Ocean State so special. With more than 460 acres of gorgeous green lawns, walking and biking paths, picnic areas, and incredible views of Narragansett Bay, it’s the perfect place to spend a few hours or even an entire afternoon. Take a leisurely walk along the waterfront, bring a picnic, watch the sailboats, or simply find a quiet spot to sit and enjoy the scenery. The sunsets here can be absolutely spectacular, too! Whether you’re visiting as a couple, with friends, or exploring on your own, Colt State Park is one of those places you really shouldn’t miss when visiting Rhode Island’s East Bay.

Barrington: Cafés, Books & Neighborhood Dining

Historic Town Hall building from 1888 featuring a stone facade, black wooden accents, and a peaked roof, surrounded by autumn foliage.

Barrington is worth including in your East Bay plans, too. The Blue Kangaroo Café offers coffee, breakfast, sandwiches, and baked treats, while Vienna Bakery is another inviting stop for pastries and a coffee break.

For lunch or dinner, Plant City Barrington offers plant-based dining, while Spaghetti Lane brings Italian neighborhood character to the table, with a café serving coffee, pastries, and desserts as well.

And yes, I’m recommending another bookstore! Barrington Books is worth visiting for its selection of books, gifts, toys, and games. Pair a little browsing with time on the East Bay Bike Path, which connects Barrington, Warren, and Bristol and gives you another way to enjoy the area.

A sunny beach scene with people lounging on the sand, a lifeguard tower, and a row of parked cars along the palm-lined path.

If you’re visiting Barrington during the warmer months, Barrington Town Beach is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon. Located along Narragansett Bay, it’s a quieter alternative to Rhode Island’s more popular beaches, with calm water, sandy shores, and beautiful views of the bay. It’s the kind of place where you can bring a beach chair, enjoy the sunshine, and just take in the scenery without all the crowds. Just be sure to check the seasonal parking and beach access rules before visiting, especially if you’re coming from out of town.

Enjoy Narragansett, Westerly & South County

A wooden tiki statue stands on a sandy beach with a view of the ocean and waves in the background. A cornhole game board is placed nearby, while a person is seen swimming in the distance under a clear blue sky.

If you’re coming for a coastal escape, turn your attention to South County. Our directory features Shelter Harbor Inn in Westerly and The Surf Shack Bed & Breakfast in Narragansett, giving you two lodging options to explore for a stay in this part of Rhode Island.

For food, George’s of Galilee in Narragansett is one of our featured seafood restaurants. Pair a visit to the area with time around the fishing port, and take a look at T’s Restaurant for another meal during your trip.

In Westerly, Paddy’s Beach Club at Misquamicut Beach is worth checking for seasonal beachfront dining, while Grey Sail Brewing gives beer lovers another reason to explore beyond the sand. Travelers who enjoy live music can also check the current schedule for the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, which has appeared in our event coverage.

Misquamicut State Beach, located in Westerly, is another must-visit for anyone who loves a good beach day (and is my personal favorite!) Known for its long stretch of sandy shoreline, beautiful Atlantic waves, and lively summer atmosphere, it’s a great place for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the ocean. The surrounding Misquamicut area also offers beach bars, restaurants, and plenty of summertime entertainment. If you’re looking for a fun, classic New England beach experience, Misquamicut is definitely worth a visit! Seasonal parking fees may apply.

Narragansett Town Beach is one of Rhode Island’s most popular beaches, known for its beautiful sandy shoreline, rolling Atlantic waves, and iconic Narragansett Towers.

A picturesque sunset over the ocean, featuring vibrant pink and orange clouds against a blue sky, with gentle waves lapping on the sandy beach.

It’s a great spot for swimming, surfing, or simply relaxing by the ocean. Be sure to explore the surrounding town, where you’ll find great restaurants, cafés, and plenty of coastal charm. It’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience Rhode Island’s beautiful coastline! Seasonal admission and parking fees may apply.

Is Rhode Island LGBTQ+ Friendly?

Two men sitting closely together in a vineyard, holding glasses of wine, smiling and looking at each other affectionately.

Absolutely! Rhode Island is one of New England’s most LGBTQ+-welcoming destinations, offering a wonderful mix of inclusive communities, beautiful coastal scenery, excellent restaurants, and plenty of things to see and do. The state has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ equality, including legal protections against discrimination and marriage equality since 2013.

Providence is especially well known for its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, nightlife, Pride celebrations, and welcoming atmosphere. But you don’t have to stay in the capital to experience Rhode Island’s charm. From the historic streets of Newport to the waterfront communities of Warren and Bristol, there are countless places to explore and locally owned businesses that welcome LGBTQ+ visitors.

Rhode Island is a place where LGBTQ+ travelers can find welcoming communities, make wonderful memories, and enjoy being themselves.

Plan a Rhode Island Getaway That Feels Like You

One of the things I love most about Rhode Island is that there’s no single way to experience it. Whether you’re looking for a romantic weekend, a relaxing beach vacation, a little nightlife, or a chance to explore some of New England’s most charming coastal towns, you’ll find plenty of reasons to fall in love with the Ocean State.

A vibrant sunset over a city skyline featuring modern buildings and bridges, reflecting in a calm river.

If it’s your first visit, I’d recommend spending a couple of nights in Providence, then making your way to Newport for its beautiful harbor, historic mansions, and coastal scenery, or heading to South County for some of Rhode Island’s best beaches. And if you have the time, please don’t overlook Warren, Bristol, and the surrounding East Bay communities. Some of my favorite Rhode Island experiences can be found in these smaller towns, where independent shops, wonderful restaurants, local artists, and beautiful waterfront views give each community its own personality.

Most importantly, make your trip your own. Don’t feel pressured to squeeze everything into one weekend. Take the scenic route, stop somewhere that catches your eye, strike up a conversation with a local, and leave a little room for the unexpected. Sometimes those unplanned moments become the best memories.

I encourage you to support the businesses that genuinely make an effort to welcome our community. Where we choose to stay, dine, shop, and spend our money matters. Helping LGBTQ+ travelers discover places where they can feel comfortable, appreciated, and free to be themselves has always been at the heart of what we do at Gay Travel Information.

And one last piece of advice: Come hungry! Rhode Island has an incredible food scene, and I’d hate for you to leave without enjoying at least a few of our local favorites.

Our state may be the smallest in the country, but believe me, there’s nothing small about its character, charm, or the experiences waiting to be discovered here.

I hope you’ll come visit, explore beyond the usual tourist stops, and discover your own reasons to love Rhode Island as much as I do.

And if you ever need a little local advice or a recommendation along the way, I’m always happy to help.

Enjoy our beautiful Ocean State, and happy travels! 🌈
