San Francisco takes the prize as gay mecca of the US, where a diverse local population of 1 million warmly embraces almost 17 million visitors every year. The city is full of character and an odd charm, which can be found in the very fabric of its social relations. And it goes without saying that you’ll find plenty of gay-friendly and gay-owned bars, restaurants, and businesses.

We’d like to curate a queer weekend getaway itinerary from San Francisco, which you can either follow in full, or choose and pick from what you like. Let us whisk you away!

The Castro

The Castro is the core of the city’s gay community. While it has changed a lot over the years, you can still feel the deep currents of activism and passion for queer rights that arose from this historic area in the 60s. 

Simply stroll down Castro Street to enjoy the trendy shops, bars, and watch a show at the Castro Theater. Definitely check out Queer AF, a new trendy gift shop and community space for queer folk.

Rainbow Honor Walk

With such a rich, rainbow-hued history, San Francisco has long been a stomping ground for famed members of the global queer community. Discover more with a walk along San Francisco’s own version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, known as the Rainbow Honor Walk. 

Concentrated along Castro Street around 18th, where even the crosswalks are rainbow-striped, you’ll find numerous plaques honoring prominent gay artists, entertainers, and activists throughout history, such as Beat poet Allen Ginsberg and modern pop artist Keith Haring.

Visit the National Aids Memorial Grove

After your gay urban experience, head on over to Golden Gate Park, and visit the National Aids Memorial Grove. The Grove is a 10-acre memorial for those impacted by AIDS. Dedicated space for healing, hope, and remembrance, this sacred ground honors those who have fought against this ongoing pandemic, ensuring that lives lost to AIDS are not forgotten.

You can wander aimlessly around Golden Gate Park afterwards, or just sit in a grassy area and people watch.

Connect with Community at “Queer Bedtime Stories”

To cap off your day, join other like-minded queer folk at the bi-weekly Queer Bedtime Stories, held at Milk SF. This event offers a platform for people to stand up and share poetry, memoirs, and history. 

This is the queer poetry and literature night you’ve been dreaming of, where every tale is uniquely queer, embracing the diversity and richness of our community. So, bring your stories, your dreams, and your open heart to Queer Bedtime Stories, where the power of words creates a magical evening of connection and inspiration.

SoMa 

SoMa is the hip nickname for South of Market. This is an artsy district with a mix of independent bookstores, trendy loft apartments, art spaces, and design studios in what is, inevitably, a very gay area. 

SoMa proudly houses a plethora of popular LGBTQ bars and nightclubs. Let’s focus in on one in particular:

Powerhouse

Powerhouse is a bar that sits in the heart of SoMa’s gay scene – and there’s no better place to start than at the city’s biggest and best-known gay cruise club. With a remarkable 50-year legacy, this club caters to the leather, jeans, kink, and fetish community in San Francisco.

No fancy frills here – just a straightforward, no-nonsense decor that sets the perfect backdrop for a night of pure indulgence. And with stiff drinks that’ll put some hair on your chest, you’ll be primed for a night of adventure.

Check out the Museums

Next, let’s hit the museums. Check out the modern art at the renowned San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where creativity knows no bounds. 

Fancy a touch of Jewish heritage and contemporary art? Make your way to the Contemporary Jewish Museum, which beautifully shows the heritage of the past colliding with the complexity of the present moment. 

The Museum of the African Diaspora, a place where the history and art of black cultures are displayed in a unique and modern setting.
