The Common Man Inn — A True Find at the Gateway to New Hampshire’s White Mountain Region!
I recently had the complete joy of spending an evening at The Common Man Inn in Plymouth, NH.
I knew I was in for something special just from all the research I did on the property prior to my stay, but the experience exceeded even my expectations.
The Common Man Inn takes on a grand, yet laid back feel the second you pull into the parking lot. There is a funky vibe about the place that screams – good time.
I was impressed by the outside decor, and loved seeing the private “pet entrance” door, but was blown away once I stepped inside.
Allow me to explain. I am a city girl, born & raised in Providence, RI, but my heart has always been in the country. My dream is own a log cabin and if I had to design the log cabin of my dreams, this would be it.
The decor is upscale rustic & modern yet very laid back.
The staff, including Innkeeper & Director of Sales, Jennifer Tower, were extremely accommodating & friendly at check in and before I knew it I was heading up to my room for the evening, CAMP.
As I headed to the elevator I was on sensory overload. There is nothing common about The Common Man Inn! The decor is colorful, whimsical with lots of wood tones, red, greens and purple. There are antiques everywhere and one-of-a-kind artifacts.
The lobby has a small gift shop, plenty of sitting room, a huge, stone wood burning fireplace and even a small cafe that serves breakfast in the morning.
Two of the most spectacular parts of the inn are The Spa and Foster’s Boiler Room restaurant, but more on that later.
Upon entering my room for the evening, my heart (almost) literally stopped. It was if someone went inside my mind and asked me to design my “dream cabin”.
CAMP isn’t just a ROOM, it is an experience. The room has a log cabin / lake house vibe with a 1940’s feel.
There is a (purposely) squeaky screen door that leads into the main room.
A HUGE, canopied, king bed with a canoe hanging above.
There is a vintage radio, rich looking (yet rustic) furniture, a gas fireplace, flat screen TV, huge dresser, desk, a daybed, a separate sitting room with a rocking chair, bench and books.
Some may call this “over the top”, I call it HEAVEN.
The linens, rugs, curtains are all gorgeous and rich quality.
There is adjustable lighting (don’t you love that?) via an antler chandelier and lots of one-of-a-kind pieces that you can spend a great deal of time admiring. The bathroom had a deep jet tub and separate sink area outside the bathroom area.
Honestly, I don’t know how anyone would want to leave this room.
I had a spa reservation at 5pm. The spa is fantastic.
The Common Man Inn offers a full-service spa with a broad range of services & treatments for stress reduction, relaxation, body maintenance, health & comfort.
All hotel & spa guests enjoy the use of the indoor pool, rock waterfall hot tub, access to the exercise equipment, and use of their sauna to or following treatments. They even offer fitness classes including Tai Chi, Yoga & Pilates.
I enjoyed the 60 minute Deep Tissue massage ($100) that focused on relieving muscle tension utilizing individual massage techniques using medium to deep pressure. It was absolutely delightful and something I would recommend to everyone.
After my massage I was ready for my dinner reservations at the inn’s onsite restaurant, Foster’s Boiler Room.
Foster’s Boiler Room serves a variety of fine American foods, from light fare to hearty selections served in a lively pub atmosphere, or fire-side in their Abenaki dining room.
The place was hopping on the Saturday night I was there.
For an appetizer I ordered the Camp Crackers which consists of Chedder, Gorgonzola & Boursin cheese topped on flatbread, cut into 12 pieces! This would be a great meal in itself. It was absolutely delicious. The flatbread was crunchy and the cheese oozed off. A 10 out of 10 for sure! ($5.99)
For dinner I ordered the Boiler Room Meatloaf which was served with mashed potatoes and zucchini ($14.99). The meatloaf was tender and flavorful with a nice mix of red pepper spice and seasoning.
For dessert I ordered the blueberry pie which was fantastic! The pie crust was lightly buttered and the blueberries fresh and popped in your mouth. It was served with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream. ($5.99)
Overall my dining experience at Foster’s Boiler Room was a delight! The service, especially the general manager, Liz, was superb and the ambiance with its gas lanterns and intimate setting was a soothing end to a perfect day.
The following morning I had a quick bite at their little cafe, Rise-N-Shine, that serves breakfast!
This cozy, little eatery is quite a deal!
For $2.50 I got an order of French Toast & homefries.
EVENT ROOMS / WEDDINGS: I can think of no better place to celebrate a special occasion, especially a wedding, than The Common Man Inn. As a matter of fact I was told they host close to 150 weddings year, that is how popular a location it is!
They offer two event halls decorated with warm wood hues and soothing natural tones. The property’s lodge-like charm creates an ideal setting for executive meetings, conferences, training seminars, reunions, weddings, rehearsal dinners, or any other distinctive event.
They welcome groups of all sizes ranging from 10 to 180. The Event Hall; which can accommodate up to 180 guests including a dance floor, can also be divided into three separate event rooms: Tenney Mountain, Baker River and Pemigewassat Rooms. Connected to the rooms is a lovely brick terrace that is accessed through a set of double French doors, and in the summer and fall months has a beautiful white tent covering to increase the guest size. The Event Hall is an ideal setting for any formal wedding; the chairs are dressed with elegant ivory covers with organza bows, dimmed lighting and candle lights set the scene. The event rooms have a common breakout lobby which houses a bar and provides additional space for display or registration tables. Foster’s Hall; which can accommodate up to 150 people including a dance floor, has a dramatic “farmer’s porch” that guests have access to during the vent.
Foster’s Hall is a lovely setting for any wedding or special occasion with rich mahogany stained chairs, the raised dance floor and head table as well as a custom wall mural that depicts the town’s history. I felt welcome from beginning to end and the general manager of Foster’s Boiler Room, Liz, explained how their event rooms would be a perfect setting for gay & lesbian weddings/civil unions. I couldn’t agree more! The inn actively seeks out the LGBT community’s business and was very receptive to hosting me at their property. I give Common Man Inn a 10 out of 10 for gay friendliness and overall perfection.

The Common Man Inn is a true “escape”. The perfect getaway to rejuvenate your senses. Everything you need is RIGHT THERE. You never have to leave the property. The decor, service, spa and food were all second to none. I also say “splurge” and rent the CAMP room, you will NOT be disappointed.
I cannot wait to return!
