A Classic Cape Cod Restaurant

I recently had the pleasure of dining at a Cape Cod classic, The Paddock Restaurant, located in Hyannis, MA.

The Paddock features fresh seafood, live lobsters, prime steaks, a popular piano bar, an impressive wine list, and is one of the best reviewed restaurants on Cape Cod.

The Paddock opened in 1970 and is celebrating it’s 41st season, run by the Zartarian family.

I was greeted by John Zartarian upon arrival and shown to my table.

The first thing that struck me about The Paddock’s interior was the classic, dark wood furnishings, almost reminiscent of a classic sea liner. One can’t help but imagine dining at the Captain’s table on the Queen Mary or Titanic.

The dark wood, soft lighting, white linens and candles may lead one to think this is an upscale only restaurant, but The Paddock invites even the casually dressed diner who wants to relax.

The Paddock’s web site describes the restaurant as an upbeat, casual spot. I would agree!

The bar area is extremely inviting and the restaurant is repeatedly voted “best piano bar” by Cape Cod Life Magazine. The Paddock has also received the Wine Spectator “Award of Excellence” for 29 years straight.

While looking over the menu and deciding what to order, my dining companion and I were served two french rolls with diced ham and Swiss cheese flavor. They were light and airy and melted in your mouth.

We were then served bread with a sun dried tomato and pesto dipping sauce which was almost impossible to stop eating!

For an appetizer we ordered the Lump Crab Cakes served with Gazpacho Coulis & Flying Fish Roe ($14). The crab cakes were moist and very rich in flavor and truly delicious. They were served with a tangy, tomato based dipping sauce and caviar.

My mother also ordered the Caesar Salad ($8) with crisp Romaine hearts, the Paddock’s classic dressing, asiago, duck confit & croutons. It was served ice cold, topped with fresh anchoivies and parmesian cheese.

For our main entrees I ordered the Grilled New York Sirloin ($33) which was 14oz of Angus Certified Beef toped with Sauce Béarnaise, which was unlike anything I have ever tasted before. Creamy, cheesy and absolutely delectable. The steak was served with buttery, whipped mashed potatoes and vegetables consisting of asparagus, carrots & colliflower.

The steak was cooked perfectly and was completely void of any fat.
My mother ordered the Lobster Stuffed Chicken Breast ($24). A Statler Breast roasted with a savory lobster stuffing, oven roasted potatoes, and Lemon Aioli. The chunks of lobster meat were massive and juicy and the chicken was plump.
Enjoying every second of our dining experience at The Paddock, we, of course, had to sample their desserts! I settled on the Nantucket Oatmeal Spice Rum cake ($6) and my mother chose their Cheesecake served with strawberries  & caramel ($7).
The Spice Rum Cake was absolutely delicious and reminded me of a cross between Carrot Cake and Spice Cake. It was very dense, served ice cold with a cinnamon cream and coconut rum glaze. Yum!
The Cheese Cake, almost double the thickness of an average piece, was New York Style and very good.

Another thing worth noting is their delicious coffee, which we were told was New England Roast. They give you a little coffee pot for your table so that you can keep filling up when the cup runs low! Very nice touch!
I also overheard from several of the tables behind me, how delicious their food was! People seemed extremely impressed with their food choices and the sound effects were almost deafening at one point! 😉

Gay & Lesbian Factor: Both John and his son Jeff were extremely accommodating and welcome to our review. Like most places throughout the Cape, I found the atmosphere of The Paddock to be very comfortable and LGBT friendly. I think this would make an excellent location for a wedding ceremony or civil union.
I am hereby “OUTING” The Paddock Restaurant as gay & lesbian friendly and worthy of our business.
Everything about the Paddock Restaurant is classy and done to perfection. A restaurant doesn’t stay in business 41 years if it isn’t being handled properly. You can tell the owner, John, takes great pride in The Paddock. He was extremely personable and friendly and treated both my mother and I like old friends.
I also found The Paddock to be extremely reasonable for the quality of food you are served. Great detail goes into each presentation and it does not disappoint.
A trip to The Paddock should be on everyone’s radar when visiting Cape Cod.
